Value refers to the use of lightness and darkness in a piece of artwork, but is visible all around us...

VALUE refers to the use of lightness (TINTS) and darkness (SHADES) in a piece of artwork, but is visible all around us...

Light and shadow is what allows us to see and recognize objects around us.

GOALS

  • Develop ability to apply various levels values.
  • Increase hand-eye coordination.
  • Develop ability to draw from an example.

VALUE ASSIGNMENT OPTIONS

  • Value grid (7x5)
  • Mirror Image Reflection
  • Artist's Choice; must include a 10-step value scale (may include more if desired)

1. VALUE GRID (Emerging)

  • Using a ruler, create 4 bars going lengthwise across drawing paper
  • Use ruler to divide into 7 equal segments. (1 inch minimum)
  • Create a value scale darkest to lightest using 5 different shading techniques.

2. MIRROR IMAGE VALUE DRAWING (Advanced)

  • Choose a magazine image.
  • Cut in half down middle of subject.
  • Tape to drawing paper.
  • Use value to create the mirror image of your picture.
  • Picture must take up half of drawing paper.

3. 10-STEP VALUE SCALE (Expert)

  • Subject matter is student's choice
  • Must include a 10-step value scale somewhere in your drawing
