FORT SUMTER:1861

  • It was a federal arsenal in South Carolina that was attacked by the Confederate Army.
  • Within two days the Confederates had taken Fort Sumter.
  • Abraham Lincoln responded to the defeat by sending out 75,000 militiamen.
  • Abraham Lincoln realized the South would put up a fight.

THE BATTLE OF BULL RUN:1861

  • The Union and the Confederates clashed along Bull Run Creek in Virginia.
  • Union soldiers were under command of General Irving McDowell.
  • Confederate soldiers were under command of General Jackson.
  • During the second battle, the Union was once again defeated.

THE BATTLE OF ANTIETAM:1862

  • The Union and Confederates armies met along Antietam Creek in Maryland.
  • Confederate battle plans were found by the Union and they were defeated.
  • The battle ended up to be the bloodiest singe-day battle of the Civil War.

THE BATTLE OF SHILOH:1862

  • General grant was attacked by the Confederates near Shiloh Church.
  • The battle lasted for two days.
  • They both lost and gained ground until Union reinforcements arrived.
  • The Confederates were defeated.

THE SEIGE OF VICKSBURG:1862

  • Vicksburg was located high on cliffs on the banks of the Mississippi River.
  • It's location made it difficult for the Union to attack.
  • The Union cut off all supplies and shelled it for six weeks.
  • The South surrendered due to a lack of food.

THE EMANCIPATION PROCLAMATION:1862

  • Was a document that freed all slaves.
  • Lincoln used it as a way to weaken the South.
  • Was presented soon after the Battle of Antietam.
  • Many freed slaves fought against the South.

THE SOUTH SURRENDERS:1865

  • On April, 9 General Lee officially surrendered to General Lee.
  • General Lee surrendered at Appomattox Courthouse.
  • The war was over but the states were still not completely united.
