A is for Arches

  • Arches helped with ship traffic and a river's flow
  • They were also used for decorations on buildings

B is for Baths

  • baths were very important in the Roman way of life
  • they were a place where the rich and the poor came together

C is for Coliseums

  • Coliseums were used to hold gladiators, criminals, and wild animals while they fought to the death
  • They could also be used for plays

D is for Double Glazing

  • The Romans used this as a way to keep their bath houses warm
  • they allowed heat to come in through the glass but since it had TWO layers of glass the heat got trapped in the spaces between the glass and acted as insullation
  • It acted almost like a greenhouuse

  • Emperor Caesar Augustus was the first emperor of Rome
  • The month August is named after him

  • The Forum was ancient Rome’s downtown district

  • The gromer was a specialized surveying instrument called used to plot straight roads for the Romans

H is for Highway

  • Rome’s first major highway was called the Via Appia and stretched 132 miles from the capital to its southern province of Campania

  • Italy is the country where Rome is located
  • It is also shaped like a boot

J is for Jupiter

  • Jupiter was the king of the Roman gods
  • He was the god of the sky, rain, clouds, and ightning
  • His greek name was Zeus

  • The Romans had to fight many battles to gain more territory for their empire
  • A famous Roman general was Constantine the Great
  • The Roman government would also sometimes assassinate or execute people who they thought were bad

L is for Law

  • The 12 Tables were etched in brass or ivory so they couldn’t be changed easily
  • The 12 Tables covered pretty much every aspect in roman life-marriage, trade, warfare, and the rights of citizens

M is for Murder/assassination

  • Julius Caesar was assassinated on March 14, 44 B.C.
  • Emperor Nero murdered his mother in 59 A.D.

  • The Pax Romana was an important accomplishment for Augustus Caesar

O is for Outcasts

  • Rome was a safe haven for ambitious outcasts

P is for Pantheon

  • The Pantheon is ancient Rome’s greatest surviving structure
  • It's only source of light is the hole in the ceiling called the oculus

  • Vesta was the Roman god of the hearth
  • She did not marry or get involved in many drama affairs

  • Romulus is who Rome is named after
  • Romulus killed his brother in order to become the first leader and founder of Rome

  • Their first great engineering achievement was Cloaca Maxima which is an extensive sewer system
  • It still functions today, 2,500 years after it was constructed

  • The toga was a type of clothing that was a popular fashion at the time

U is for Uranus

  • Uranus was the Roman god of the sea
  • He could also summon hurricanes and earthquakes

V is for Venus

  • Venus was the Roman goddess of love and beaty

W is for water

  • Water was especially important for the Roman way of life
  • Water was used for, (take a deep breath "ba dump crash") aqueducts, fountains, baths, drinking, and entertainment purposes

X is for xenodochium

  • an xenodochium is an inn; a hospital; a convent.

Y is for Ymber

  • A ymber is another word for a storm or rain

Z is for Zamia

  • Zamia is another word for damage or injury
