Look around you!

You don't have to go far to be internationally mindful. Let's first have a look at Rutgers University - there are international students all around us.

Chart: Top 5 countries represented at Rutgers.
China, India, South Korea, Canada and Turkey

Each semester we also receive exchange students studying abroad. They come from the universities where you could potentially be studying.

They include students from Barbados, Costa Rica, Spain, Japan, Australia, Hong Kong, the Netherlands, the U.K. , to name a few.

There are student orgs that you can join to connect with international students early:

-Global Ambassadors: Connect Interested Prospective Study Abroad Students with Current Int'l and Exchange Students at Rutgers.

- We have over 145 programs, in over 45 countries
- Knowing a foreign language is not a requirement for study abroad; although recommended

SO WHEN DO WE GO?

  • Summer after 1st year
  • Spring semester of 2nd year
  • Transfers
  • Embedded program in Fall or Spring of 1st year
You can begin studying abroad as early as the summer following your freshmen year.

-You can study abroad during the semester second semester sophomore
-Application Deadlines are Always a Semester Prior to term you intend on going abroad; see when applications open up on our website
-It is important you consult with your department academic advisor on deciding when is the best time for you to study abroad with your curriculum
-What are your academic goals abroad; what requirements do you want to fulfill
-Consider when there is more funding opportunities available
-Typically more funding opps available for semester although cost of program is higher

SEMESTER EMBEDDED

SUMMER & WINTER

There are options to meet every students' needs, including options for short term study abroad

- Summer options can range from 2 week programs to 8 weeks and winter is generally 1-2 weeks; they're often times Rutgers faculty-led programs where you are going with a group of students
-programs can include research and internship component
- intensive language options available
- Dates and amount of credits vary

SEMESTER & YEAR

-Exchanges and Direct Enrollment: You can take courses directly at another university among international peers

-We're partnered with well ranked universities in the world with strengths in Humanities, Social Sciences, Business, Engineering and the Sciences. There's a program to match every student's interest


SERVICE LEARNING

Opportunities Available All Terms
- the opportunity to earn credit abroad while participating in community-based service projects around the globe.
- Places students in direct contact with local communities abroad
-Duration of service learning projects can vary
-they are typically faculty led offered during the summer
- during the semester you can have a service placement at a local community organization while enrolled at a university

ABROAD WITH YOUR MAJOR

  • All Rutgers-credited programs
  • Fulfill major, minor, or GenEd requirements
  • Approval from academic departments
- Courses completed abroad automatically transfer back as general Rutgers credits; you will received a grade and it will count towards your total graduation credits
- Specific degree requirements can be fulfilled abroad; you do not necessarily have to fulfill major requirements abroad
- Course approval from a department must be received and recorded prior to your participation on the program; this is why it is important to consult with your academic advisor early on.

ACADEMIC PLANNING

ADvanced Search to search programs that may offer disciplines in your major/minor/gen ed requirements

-Search Service Learning, Interests and Language of Instruction

-Visit their academics catalog to review coursework offered

- Notify Your Academic Early That you're interested in Studying ABroad

FINANCIAL PLANNING

Program costs vary, it is important to also consider standard of living in those country and other out of pocket expenses in addition to program cost.

Generally, financial aid packages incl. scholarships and tuition remission can be applied during semester study abroad.

Summer aid and scholarships are also available during summer study abroad

- There is an exhaustive scholarship director on our website
-Please refer to website for deadlines, keep in mind that some scholarship deadlines are much earlier than our application deadline
-national scholarships have deadlines well in advance of the study abroad program start date, 6 months to a year

-Our office can assist you in identifying suitable scholarships for you and reviewing your scholarship essays
-Resources available on-campus - The Writing Center, past scholarship recipients, study abroad advisor, or peers.
