  • It is the fourth largest river by volume in North America
  • It's drainage area is 259,000 square miles

  • It starts in British Columbia and Canada going all the way to Astoria, Oregon.
  • It forms the border for Oregon and Washington

  • In 1836 the very first steamboat, The Beaver, entered the Columbia River
  • More than 40% of wheat is transported by Columbia River

  • The Columbia River destroyed Vanport City in 1948 due to flood after a failed dike.
  • They built a bridge right along to trade better with different Indian tribes

  • It has 20 dams to make hydroelectric power.
  • Many people people fish there
  • A 9000 year old skeleton was found there in 1996.
  • Lewis and Clark were looking for the northwest passage and found the Columbia River and used it for a direct passage to the Pacific
