PRESENTATION OUTLINE

1.Fascism -Hitler used this system of government to dictate all European Affairs, and suppress who he pleased.

2.Appeasement -Minister Neville Chamberlain appeased Hitler and gave Czechoslovakia , which made him look weak.

3.Blitzkrieg -Germans war strategy which means "lightning war,"military tactic designed to create disorganization among enemy forces.

4.Embargo -The US put an embargo on the amount of oil and steel shipping to Japan because they were a direct threat to our ally Great Britain.

5.2nd Great Migration - African Americans moved to cities in states in the North, Midwest and West to work in factories.

6.Four Freedoms Speech -FDR's vision in which the American ideals of individual liberties were extended throughout the world, convincing Americans to want to come out of isolation.

7.Hemispheric Defense Zone - Developed by FDR declaring the entire western half of the Atlantic as part of the Western Hemisphere and therefore neutral.

8.Pearl Harbor -Japan attacks Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 killing and injuring thousands, this attack was a factor of America joining the war.

9.Rationing -The US went into a rationing mode during the war to conserve materials and use ration coupons to limit purchases.

10.Victory Gardens -On the home front, Americans began planting Victory Gardens to provide more food for the Country and soldiers in the war.

11.Double V Campaign -The Victory at home and abroad campaign encouraged the fight against racism and fascism, since their were African Americans fighting in the war but still being discriminated against.

12.Zoot Suit Riot -In Los Angeles during the war sailors, soldiers, and Mexican Americans began rioting because of the extra clothe Mexican Americans were using in their suits, Zoot Suits.

13.Bracero Program -This program encouraged Mexicans to come to America, beacause of the shortage in labor, US farmers became dependent on Bracero Laborers.

14.Doolittle Raid- A response attack of Pearl Harbor organized by James Doolittle to bomb Tokyo, this boosted moral for Americans and exposed Japanese Vulnerability.

15.Island Hopping -General Douglas McArthur's troops used this strategy, capturing lightly defended islands throughout the Pacific, one by one, to get in striking distance of Japan.

16.Operation Torch - The British and American invasion of French North Africa.

17.Operation Overlord - the code name for landing in France and the start of the Liberation of Europe.

18.Manhattan Project -A code-name for the program led by General Grover to build an atomic bomb, which will be later used on Japan, twice.

19.V-E Day - On May 7, 1945 Germany surrendered, the next day (May 8) was proclaimed V-E day or Victory in Europe day.

20.V-J Day -On September 2, 1945, a formal surrender ceremony was held in Tokyo Bay aboard the USS Missouri, President Truman declared September 2 to be V-J Day.

21.Franklin D Roosevelt - The 32nd President, during most of WW2.

22.Adolf Hitler -an Austrian-born German politician who was the leader of the Nazi Party and was the dictator over Europe from 1934 to 1945

23.Joseph Stalin -leader of the Soviet Union from the mid-1920s until his death in 1953. the General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, the dictator of the state, made a deal with Hitler but was turned on and switched to the Allies side.

24.Douglas McArthur - An American five-star general and Field Marshal of the Philippine Army,The master mind behind Island hopping which played a big role in the Pacific theater during World War II.

25.Winston Churchill - British statesman who was the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1940 to 1945, he was a strong leader that mad his country even stronger.

26.George Patton -a senior officer of the United States Army, who commanded the U.S. Seventh Army, he lead the American forces in Morocco, the first time Americans faced the German army pushing the Germans back.

27.Dwight Eisenhower -when George Patton first faced the Germans the battle was under Eisenhower's command.

28.Harry S. Truman -The Vice President of FDR, who became president after FDR died, and made the final decision on dropping the atomic bombs on Japan.

29.Rosie the Riveter -A propaganda figure to encourage women to work in factories to help American and its soldiers.

30.Tuskegee Airmen -"an experiment" that allowed African American men to serve in the air force that graduated, they are known to have succeeded in all missions.

31.Navajo Code Talkers -Over 400 Navajo served in the Marine Corp as code talkers that transmitted vital messages during war, and is the only unbreakable military code.

32.442nd Regimental -The most decorated unit is US military history, made up of about 1,500 Japanese American volunteers.

33.Neutrality Act 1939 -Congress passed this act in the 1930s, in response to the growing turmoil in Europe and Asia that eventually led to World War II, stating that the US was going to remain neutral in the war.

34.Lend Lease Act -Congress authorized the sale, lease, transfer, or exchange of arms and supplies to any country whose defense the president deems vital to the defense of the United States(Military aid to Britain).

35.Executive Order 9066 -Issued by FDR, forcing over 110,000 Japanese Americans to leave their homes in California, Washington, and Oregon to go to one of the ten detention camps in the US, no matter if they were American citizens or not.

36.Korematsu vs. United States -Korematsu refused to go to an internment camp and thought his right were being taken, they took him to jail,so he sued the US and lost because the Supreme Court ruled that the actions were necessary for National Security.
