1. WHAT AM I FEELING?

Your feelings are the first clue that you are about to learn a new cultural lesson. Travellers learn to pay attention to them!

You are standing in a lineup at customs and immigration in China. Everyone is crowding around, cutting in front of you, and taking your space...

2. GIVE IT MEANING

Describe your experience from your cultural perspective.

In Canada, if I am in a line where people are touching or pushing me, it means I am in a pushy or angry crowd

3. TRY AGAIN

Make up a new meaning. Choose a meaning you KNOW is WRONG. The more ridiculous and absurd the better.

I feel crowded because it is "Stand-on-Strangers-Toes-Tuesday" here in China. It brings luck!

The key is to make up an unbelievable explanationRidiculous explanations force you to begin looking from a new perspective

Most first interpretations are wrong, so choosing the absurd helps us remember we're probably wrong

4. STAY CURIOUS
