Throughout this article, June Tagney compares guilt and shame, and tests this on 550 fifth graders, then again when they’re in 8th grade, then again when they were 18. She found that those more prone to shame drank at a younger age, wouldn’t apply for college, and were more likely to commit suicide. When she tested the ones who were more prone to guilt, They were less likely to try drugs, less likely to become criminals, and less likely to commit suicide

In an article by the LA Times, they said that guilt benefits others because if you have wronged someone in any way, them knowing that you feel guilt could possibly make them feel better knowing you feel that way.
In conclusion, guilt is beneficial because the people who learn to act on that guilt will be more proactive in life, and people knowing that you feel guilt will feel better knowing that you feel guilt
