Plate Tectonics-
The theory that the lithosphere is split into different sections called plates that are constantly moving.

Convection Current-
The transfer of heat through a fluid.

Slab Pull-
When gravity pulls a plate into the mantle.

Ridge Push-
When new crust pushes the old crust away.

Divergent Plate Boundaries-
When two tectonic plates move away from each other.

On land plate boundaries form Rift Valleys.

In the ocean, divergent boundaries form mid-ocean ridges.

Convergent Plate Boundaries-
Are two plates that move towards each other.

When ocean plates and continental plates converge they form volcanic arcs like the Chili Peru Deep Sea.

When two ocean plates converge they form islands like the Islands of Japan.

When two continental plates converge they form mountains like Mt. Everest.

Subduction Zone-
When one plate goes under another plate and into the mantle.

Deep Ocean Trench-
Caused by subduction; when old ocean crust is pushed under another crust.

Transform Plate Boundary-
When plates slide past each other in opposite directions.

When plates move along transform boundaries earthquakes can occur.

An example of a transform boundary is the San Andreas Fault in California.
