Leonardo da Vinci's Conducted a Scientific Study of Light and Shadow Influenced Modern Times.

  • Born on April 15, 1452 in the town of Vinci
  • Aprenticed to the sculptor and painter Andrea del Verrocchio at the age of 15
  • On May 2, 1519 he died in Chateau of Cloux

LIGHT AND SHADOW

  • This technique is known as Chiaroscuro
  • Discovered that objects were not compromised of outlines.
  • They were actually three dimensional bodies defined by light and shadow.
  • He also saw that an object's detail and color changed as it receded in the distance.
  • This technique gave his paintings a soft lifelike quality that made older paintings look cartoony and flat.
"Leonardo weny beyond his teaching to make a scientific study of light and shadow in nature. It dawned on him that objects were not compromised of outlines, but were actually three - dimensional bodies defined by light and shadow known as chiaroscuro, this technique gave his paintings the soft, lifelike quality that made other paintings look cartoony and flat."

Da Vinci studied the proportions of men, women and children to create the "ideal" human figure.

The "ideal" human

  • First artist to study the proportions of humans.
  • His study of nature and anatomy emerged up in his paintings.
  • His dissections of the human body paved the way for remarkably accurate figures.
  • Michelangelo for example, painted ridiculously muscular bodies, which he referred to as "bags of nuts."
  • He was the first to understand how the body moves and incorporated
He referred to Michelangelo's paintings as a "bag of nuts" hence the picture of the bag of nuts.

How it influenced the world today

  • Because of his scientific studies and incorporating them in his art.
  • It soon became a standard during the Renaissance Era.
  • Although some ofhis ideas did not get recognized till hundred years later.
  • He had great insight into science and his study of anatomy
  • The resulting drawing of the Vitruvian man is now iconic.
Became a standard to paint realistically.
Some ideas did not get recognized till years later. (Scientific, and art wise)
Vitruvian man now an iconic figure.
