Key Differences

“Okay. #58, I flagged because… what the fuck.”
Your RCE may be different!
- starting earlier
- competency-based residency design
- learning strategies similar, but exam methods will differ

Shared scope

“We’re going to be fucking smart at the end of this… we’re actually going to know some stuff for once.”
Remember: you're in this together! Groups will be tested heavily:
- some groups break up
- some groups fight
- some people go solo
*you have to believe that everyone wants to contribute

Why a group:
- you don't know, what you don't know

Shared Schedules

“When I’m done these questions, I’m just going to fucking read the purple book front to cover…”
Make a schedule and (try to) stick to it!
- assign some sort of "homework" / preparation
- try to complete
- be flexible
- be understanding

Shared Sustinence

“Hey, how much do you fill up your gas tank?”
Make an event of studying / it becomes a ritual
- food
- workouts
- hangouts
- teleconference

Shared Supplies

“Up-to-Date says that PE can cause pulsus paradoxus… Er, sorry, I mean Wikipedia.”
Share notes, textbooks, good reviews

--> remember: the focus is on bang for your buck; UTD is not always the best at that!

Shared (Common) sense

“He’s got fucking chest pain when changing his clothes… he’s fucking going to die.”
Take time to explain things to each other - hearing different explanations from different perspective is what will facilitate the most efficient learning

Shared Studying

“I didn’t know you could get it in your asshole… but okay.”
Share things you learn - learn to laugh (and be appalled at) how much you don't know

Shared Stupidity

“I don’t think blue bloaters are really cyanotic… Okay… I guess they are.”
Share things you don't know! Don't be afraid to admit vulnerabilities. The whole point is to become better - and understanding that other people can make you better.

Shared Stress

“Guys, it’s tinea pedis, because it’s always forever…”
At some point, you're going to fly a little close to the sun... it's okay! Just recognize it and know the importance of pacing yourself.

Shared Soreness

“If someone tried to submit this question to the Royal College, they should be burned at the stake.”
Vent. Some of these things don't make sense. But you're a minion, so play the game.

Shared Suffering

“What the fuck is this? Who is expecting us to know this shit?!”
We all feel this way. Trust me. We do.

(OVER) SHARING...
“Ugghhhhh… guys… I might need to take a shit. Give me 2-3 minutes.”

“What’s going on there, guys?” (videoconferenced)

You know you're a tight-knit group when...

Sharing is caring

“How sure are you? Because I don’t want to look this up.”
But it's okay, because sharing is caring.

Shared success

"WHAT PERCENTAGE SHOULD WE BE AIMING FOR ON THIS TEST?"
It's terrible, but you'll make it! The key is:
- stick together
- respect the exam
- pace yourself
- understand that it's only an exam

"You just have to realize that you on your worst day, is probably still better than them on their best day."
