DAILY DRINKING

  • Alcohol became a central of everybody's life
  • Cheaper than tea or coffee
  • Men drank more than women
  • Young men drank, when away from their families

  • MA: passed a law in 1838
  • Maine: passed law im 1851
  • Laws were too difficult to enforce

  • Closed down saloons; thought to have major effect
  • Wheeller: enforcing prohibition by enacting strict laws
