PROHIBITION ON STATE LEVELS

• MA: passed a law in 1838
• Maine: passed law im 1851
• Laws were too difficult to enforce

ANTI-SALOON LEAGUE

• Founded in 1893
• A major force in the prohibition movement
• Closed down saloons; thought to have major effect
• Wheeller: enforcing prohibition by enacting strict laws
• Cherrington: educating children about the alcohol

TEETOTALISM

• Complete abstinence from alcoholic beverages
• Teetotalism movement was created by Joseph Livesey
• Livesey: leader of the temperance movement
