WOMENS PAY IN THE 1960S

  • In the 1960's, job listings were separated for men and women. The higher level jobs were listed under men
  • In some cases, there were job listings for the same jobs, but women were payed less for it.
  • On average, women earned 59-64 cents for every dollar a man earned.

FACTS AND STATISTICS

  • The gender wage gap mostly affects women of color.
  • Women earn less than men in all jobs except for police sheriffs, bookkeeping, accounting and clerks.
  • For women ages 15-24, the wage gap is $4,373 per year. By the time they're 45-64, they earn $15,404 less than men per year.

MYTH?

  • Some people believe that the pay gap is a myth, but it is proven that one year after graduation, women earned 82% of what men earned.

EQUAL PAY ACT OF 1963

  • This is a US labor law, aimed at abolishing wage based on gender. It was signed by John F. Kennedy on June 10th.
