Ancient Greece had lots of great culture, history, and people that have inspired important people and have made things that are very important for human kind.
What's the difference between direct democracy and representative democracy?

- In direct democracy all citizens meet together and make decisions through voting.
- In representative democracy citizens elect a leader that makes decisions on the behalf of the people.
Ancient Greece wasn't a single country run by one government. It was run by things called city-states. City-states are areas that have their own government.
Also, people from Ancient Greece didn't call themselves Greeks. They referred to themselves as Corinthians if they were from Corinth, etc etc
THEY WERE BIG RIVALS
- Spartan life was simple. Their focus was on obedience and war.
- Athenian life was great. You could get a great education, pursue a great career, and have a choice to go to war.
Now the Spartans just wanted to protect Greece, but Athens wanted more land. this led to a war with all the Greeks.
However, the two areas had a similar government. They both had an Assembly, whose members were elected by the citizens.
GREECE WAS A VERY BIG COUNTRY
- It has over 1400 islands
- It's almost completely surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea.
- Around 80% of Greek mainland is mountainous, and the mountains formed barriers around the cities.
- Under the rule of Alexander the Great, Greece stretched all the way to Egypt and India.
ISLANDS
- Since there are 1,400 islands in Greece, many people lived on them.
- Some islands include Crete, Rhodes, Chios, and Delos.
Alexander the Great was a man of great power. He was born into royalty and he conquered a lot of areas in the world.
Alexander had already inherited some land from his father, King Phillip II, who was the previous king. He also founded 20 cities with the name Alexandria.
THE GREEKS HAVE MADE LOTS OF CONTRIBUTIONS TO SOCIETY
- Athens was considered the cradle of democracy.
- Many mathmetitians and philosphers came up with great ideas lf how the world works.
- The Greeks made lots of art and techniques for art.
- The olympics were founded in Greece.
Some great people in Ancient Greece made ground-breaking discoveries. With theories on physics, math, biology, and more.

- Archimedes calculated the formula of pi and studied how things sank and floated.
- Aristachurs had the idea that the earth orbited the sun.
- Hippocrates taught that sickness could be from natural causes and studied medicine.
- Aristotle classified animals based on characteristics, such as their looks, how they breed, etc.
Aristotle was a smart man that studied and came up with ideas about the animal kingdom. He wrote several books about how animals breed, their natural history, the anatomy, and more.
He was also very educated in other topics too, such as logic, physics, politics, and much more. He opened up his own school in Athens, called the Peripatetic School. He also educated Alexander the Great.

- He was born in 384 BC and died in 322 BC.
- He was taught by Plato and he stayed at the academy for nearly 20 years as a student and a teacher.
- He was inspired by his father, who was a doctor for the king at the time.
