PRESENTATION OUTLINE
FIBER EVIDENCE IS NOT UNIQUE
COLOR, MAKE AND SHAPE CAN HELP FIND WHERE THE FIBER CAME FROM
Fibers are gathered at a crime scene with tweezers, tape, or a vacuum.
EXAMINATION
- A compound microscope or a spectrometer may be used to examine evidence
- The micro-spectrophotometer is the best for examining fibers
ANALYZING
- compare color and diameter.
- Dyes can also be further analyzed with chromatography,
- looks for lengthwise striations or pits on a fiber's surface, or unusual shapes
COMPARING
- Whatever has been gathered from the crime scene is then compared against fibers from a suspect source
- Fibers from car or home are laid side by side for visual inspection through a microscope
