Malala is... altruistic

Dictionary Definition:

  • adjective Unselfishly concerned for or devoted to the welfare of others (opposed to egoistic).

Example 1- Page 59

  • “Bless us all and protect us,” I’d say. “Bless our father and family.” Then I’d correct myself. “No, bless our street. “No, bless our neighborhood. Bless all of Swat.” Then I’d say, “No, bless all of Pakistan. No, not just Pakistan. Bless all the world.”

This shows that Malala doesn't just care about herself and people that she knows but everyone in the world!

Example #2

  • During chapter 12 Malala is asked by the BBC to do a anonymous diary entry to be on the BBC website.
  • "A friend who worked at the BBC, the powerful British Broadcast Corporation network, had asked him to find someone from the school to write a diary about life under the Taliban for its Urdu website- a teacher or older student."

This shows that Malala wants to share awareness and will sacrifice her identity and safety to hopefully help people stand up to the Taliban.

Example #3 Page 140

  • "Then a new worry seized me. Did my parents know were I was? Maybe they were wondering the streets and valleys of Mingora looking for me. But I am a hopeful person, and therfore when I see problems, I will always think about solutions"

This shows that Malala was more worried about her parents and their worrying, than her own problem

Example 4 Page 140

  • "Then I thought, I need to go out and start working to earn money so I can buy a phone and call my family so we can all be together again."

This shows that Malala will do anything so that her parents can see her again.

Example 5 Page 141

  • Dr. Javid Kayani, came in with his cell phone. "We are going to call your parents," he said. "You won't cry" he said firmly. "You won't weep. You will be strong. We don't want your family to worry."

This shows that Malala will do anything to please and make sure that her parents were okay. She would not cry to worry them.

Example 6 Page 146

  • "She said the hospital would like to take a picture of of me. I thought this was really funny. Why would anyone want a picure of me looking the way I did? But everyone here was so nice, and I wanted to be nice in return. I agreed."

This shows that Malala is willing to make someone else happy even if it may not please herself.

Example 7

  • My seventh example is when Malala wakes up from her coma. She automatically starts worrying about her family and friends before she worries about herself and what happened to her.

This shows that Malala was worries more about her friends and family than she was about herself.

Example 8

  • Earlier in the story Malala talked about how her best friend would get upset with her and would give her the silent treatment. After a day Malala would apologize so that they could be friends again.

This shows that Malala cares about her friend and doesn't want her to be upset or mad, so she always takes the blame!

Example 9

  • In the beginning of the book Malala sees kids looking through the garbage heap to find food and useful things that had been thrown away. She said that she would want to help people like that who has to look in the trash for food.

This shows that Malala wants to help people and would spend her time helping people.

Example 10

  • Malala was given a newspaper with a picture of her family, so she knows that they are okay. She finds her mother's foot in the very bottom of the picture.
  • Malala forgot about all of her questions that she wanted to ask and instead she took the time to see if she can find anything out about her parents

This shows that Malala cares, loves, and worries about her family and wants them to be safe more than worrying about what happened.
