SAFETY PRACTICES IN THE SHOP

INTRODUCTION

  • The most frequent cause of injuries and accidents in agriculture comes from the use of tools and machinery.
  • 44% of all agriculture-related injuries occur while using farm machinery.

SETTING UP A SAFE SHOP

  • Install equipment and machinery correctly.
  • Provide storage
  • Provide proper orientation
  • Keep work area free of ...
  • Mark any area where an object may fall
  • Protect yourself

COLOR MARKINGS

  • Red = Danger
  • Orange = Hazard
  • Yellow = Caution
  • Green = Safety
  • Purple = Radioactivity
  • Gray = Work Area
  • White/Black Stripes = traffic
  • Blue = Information

PPE

  • 36% - arms and hands
  • 10% - head
  • 25% - body

PPE

  • Safety goggles/glasses
  • Face shields
  • Head gear
  • Protective clothing
  • Proper footwear
  • Gloves
  • Earplugs
  • Masks and respirators

FIRE

  • Combustible materials
  • Heat
  • Oxygen

PREVENTING FIRE

  • Store fuels appropriately
  • Keep the shop cool
  • Use fire in designated areas only

EXTINGUISHING FIRES

  • Class A = combustibles
  • Class B = flammable liquids
  • Class C = electrical equipment
  • Class D = combustible metals

FIRE EXTINGUISHERS

  • Varied
  • Green triangle = Class A fire
  • Red square = Class B fire
  • Blue circle = Class C fire
  • Yellow star = Class D fire

HOW TO USE

  • Pull ring pin
  • Back away 10 feet
  • Aim nozzle at the BASE of the fire
  • Squeeze lever and sweep nozzle side to side motion across the base of the fire

DO NOT:

  • "Horseplay" in the shop
  • Ignore rules and regulations
