Temperament And Heredity

No Description

PRESENTATION OUTLINE

TEMPERAMENT AND HEREDITY

  • Temperament: emotional excitability
  • Heredity: the passing on of physical or mental characteristics genetically from one generation to another

Untitled Slide

EXAMPLES

  • No two children are alike, some are difficult and some aren’t
  • Heredity have an effect on genes and environment has an effect on your personality

MOLECULAR GENETICS

Specific genes influencing behavior

EXAMPLES

  • Heredity influences body weight, but there is no single “obesity gene”. More likely some genes influence how quickly the stomach tells the brain “I’m full”
  • Molecular behavior genetics is to find some of the many genes that together orchestrate traits such as body weight, sexual orientation, and extraversions

HERITABILITY

THE EXTENT TO WHICH VARIATION AMONG INDIVIDUALS CAN BE ATTRIBUTED TO THEIR GENES

EXAMPLES

  • Heritability can vary from study to study
  • If all schools were of uniform quality, all families equally loving, and all neighborhoods equally healthy, then heritability would increase (because differences due to environment would decrease)

GENE ENVIRONMENT INTERACTION

HOW HEREDITY AND ENVIRONMENT WORK TOGETHER

Untitled Slide

EXAMPLES

  • Go barefoot for a summer and you will develop toughened, calloused feet, a biological adaption to friction meanwhile your neighbor will remain a tender foot.

EXAMPLES

  • Our shared biology enables our developed diversity
  • Gene and experience interact together
