Non-invasive Cardiac Tests

Holter monitor, echocardiogram, stress echo, thallium stress test

Like invasive cardiac procedures, these methods are used to determine the extent of cardiovascular disease.

The are used to evaluate

  • Symptoms like angina, palpitations (skipped heart beats) and shortness of breath.
  • They are non-invasive techniques, meaning they do not enter the body.

Holter monitor

Records the electroactivity of the heart over a 24-48 hour period (or more)

The patient keeps a diary while wearing the monitor.

They record time of day symptoms occur and what they were doing at the time.

Echocardiogram

Ultrasound of the heart

Echocardiograms evaluate:

  • Structure and function of myocardium
  • Myocardial size and movement of myocardial walls
  • Function of heart valves
  • Movement of blood through the heart
  • Blood clots in the heart
