PRESENTATION OUTLINE
Perception of men in Family Domestic Violence Custody Cases.
Thesis
I believe that men should be given the same objectivity as women are given in domestic violence cases, especially in decisions about child custody.
A domestic violence case was just reported in family court, if you had to choose between the male (father) or female (mother) who would it be?
You probably thought it was the male. Why is this the case?
It is not uncommon to assume the aggressor to be the male. But it's important to understand why we have this perception.
The reason you probably thought the male was the aggressor is because 77% of domestic violence acts.
Male victimization is a new field field of research in domestic violence. This has become a controversial issue for some.
That is because it does not fit the narrative that only females can be victims of domestic violence.
The bioethical issue addressed here is the health and well-being of the family.
With the escalating numbers of divorces due to domestic violence, it's important that the issue of family health be considered.
Females are more frequently considered to be victims of domestic violence by the culture and media.
The statistics support these claims, but it is changing and becoming more controversial because of the "best interest of the child ruling"
This means that children are getting a voice in the final custody decision.
Child custody, child support and visitation are determined based upon the best interests of the child.
This helps both parents and their children spend time together.
This new legal language supports a more unbiased decision regarding issues surrounding child care.
This is a relevant ruling because "At least three million children witness acts of domestic violence annually."
It is the courts responsibility to consider the "best interests of the child."
Men only get majority custody around 8% and females around 88%. With equal custody being 2-6%
We have given an incorrect social dimension to domestic violence. With more understanding we will get a better idea of how to handle this issue.
The role the father has in a child's life is essential.
A father can boost confidence in his child especially in early developing years.
In daughters especially it can improve their outlook on men for the rest of their life.
This can be a help to the issue as a whole to bring more people together.
Looking back on these points we see why females are victims and get custody more than males. But there is information coming out in support of male victims. Getting us one step closer is the "best interest of the child" ruling.
