What Are Inhalants?
Any substance that, when inhaled through the nose and/or mouth causes a psychoactive effect in the user

EFFECTS (WANTED)

  • Hallucinations
  • Euphoria (happiness)
  • Loss of inhibitions
  • Excitement
  • Exhilaration
  • Head rush

SHORT-TERM EFFECTS (UNWANTED)

  • Slurred speech
  • Dizziness
  • Tight chest
  • Bloody nose
  • Confusion
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Double vision
  • Depression
  • Black outs
  • Coma

LONG-TERM EFFECTS (UNWANTED)

  • Tiredness
  • Weight loss
  • Memory loss
  • Pale appearance
  • Aggresion
  • Loss of hearing/smell
  • Shakiness
  • Thirst
  • Brain degeneration
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Heart damage

HOW DO YOU TAKE IT?

  • Sniffing or snorting fumes from containers
  • Spraying aerosols directly into mouth or nose
  • Sniffing or inhaling fumes from substances sprayed or placed into a plastic or paper bag. Also known as bagging

HOW DO YOU TAKE IT? (CONTINUED)

  • Huffing from an inhalant soaked rag stuffed in the mouth
  • Inhaling from balloons filled with nitrous oxide

HOW ADDICTING IS IT?(PHYSICAL)

  • Hand tremors
  • Agitation
  • Sweating
  • Insomnia
  • Rapid heartbeat/ pulse
  • Nausea and vomiting

HOW ADDICTING IS IT?(MENTAL)

  • Hallucinations
  • Nervousness
  • Delusions

RISKS AND DANGERS

  • Spreads quickly to brain because it can't tell difference between good and bad oxygen
  • Puts a coat of paint on the lungs
  • Suffocation
  • Seizures
  • Coma
  • Choking
  • Fatal injury

TREATMENT

  • Have a medical examination
  • Detoxification
  • Get help

Sudden sniffing death syndrome

Children can die the first time, or any time, they try an inhalant. The inhalant causes the heart to beat rapidly or erratically, resulting in cardiac arrest.

INTERESTING FACTS

  • Laughing gas was used as one of the first inhalants in the 1700s
  • 10.1% of 8th graders have abused inhalants at least once in the past year

EXAMPLES OF INHALANTS

  • There are 4 types: solvents, anesthetics, aerosols, and nitrites
  • Paint, adhesives, nail polish, type-writer correction fluid, dry-cleaning, gasoline, lighter fluid, nail polish remover, paint remover and thinner
