PLATE TECTONICS

PLATE TECTONICS ARE MOVEABLE PEICES OF THE CRUST.

THIS PICTURE

IS AN EXAMPLE OF SUBDUCTION, A MOVEMENT OF THE PLATES.

Convection currents:
Movement of liquids in the mantel caused by different densities.

Causes of the plate movement: the lithosphere, slab pull, and slab push.

The lithosphere is not a solid, but instead has plasticity, the ability to "flow".

Slab pull is an act of gravity. When the ocean crust is begging to get destroyed under the continental crust, Gravity is also pulling it deeper into the mantel.

Slab pull occurs when the plates are being sub ducted under the continental plate. Gravity then pulls down on it.

And finally slab push. This occurs in the ocean Rift Valley when the new formed crust pushes the older crust inland.

THIS IS AN EXAMPLE

OF AN OCEAN RIFT VALLEY

When the magma cools, it creates new crust that pushes old crust inland.

PLATE BOUNDARIES

That picture represented two plates moving apart. An example would be a Rift Valley in Iceland.

When this happens in the ocean, you get a deep ocean trench.

When a continent and an ocean trench converge, you get an ocean trench.

OCEAN VS OCEANIC

YOU GET A VOLCANO. HAWAII IS ONE OF MANY.

TRAMSFORM

PLATE BOUNDARIES

This happens when two plates slide past each other, but don't create or destroy crust. Instead it causes earthquakes. An example would be the San Andreas fault.
