  • 17.8 million orphans caused by aids
  • Around 15.1 million lived in sub saharan regions
  • The scale of the orpahn problem is masked
  • Orphaned children miss out on opportunities

ECONOMIC IMPACT

  • Reduces availability of human capital
  • Victims are unable to work
  • Require a great deal of medical care
  • Smaller skilled labor force

ANTIRETROVIRALS

  • Expensive drugs
  • HIV treatment is very successful
  • African people can't afford medication
  • Drugs extend lifetime
