SISTER MAURA CLARKE

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

  • Maura Clarke was born in 1931 in Bronx, New York
  • She first served as a Maryknoll Sister in Nicaragua
  • First missionary work was in 1954 where she took care of children at San Antonio Bronx School
  • She went on a mission to Siuna where she was a teacher, and later became the director of Maryknoll
  • When there was an earthquake in 1972, Maura chose to live with the victims in the camps

DEATH OF SISTER MAURA CLARKE

  • The most important decision Sister Maura Clarke made was to continue to work for the poor
  • The decisions came with a lot of danger, and Maura knew that the duty came with a lot of risks
  • On December 2, 1980, Maura was beaten, raped, and murdered
  • These women were four of the 75,000 people who were killed

CONSCIENCE

  • Realizing the great needs of those in Nicaragua, Maura felt compelled by God to put them before herself
  • She knew the government was wrongly persecuting innocent people
  • She acted with love to help the people feel safe
  • She used practical judgement before acting so courageously.
  • She knew once she acted her life would be in danger

KOHLBERG'S THEORY OF MORAL DEVELOPMENT

  • Stage six goes beyond what is good for oneself or what society approves of
  • Sister Maura Clarke reached stage six because she went against the government to do the right thing
  • She knew her actions would lead her to fatal consequences, however, she continued
  • Jesus taught that people are obligated to make sure everyone is being treated fairly
  • Sister Maura may have had a tragic end, however, her wisdom and strength will live on forever
