PRESENTATION OUTLINE

LUNA10

A MISSION ABOUT SPACE N' STUFF

Who?
The Manufacturer of Luna10 or Lunik10 was GSMZ Lavochkin. The company develops and manufactures spacecraft such as the Fregat rocket upper stages, satellites and interplanetary probes.

What?
Luna 10 conducted extensive research in lunar orbit, gathering important data on the strength of the Moon’s magnetic field, its radiation belts, and the nature of lunar rocks (which were found to be comparable to terrestrial basalt rocks), cosmic radiation, and micrometeoroid density. Perhaps its most important finding was the first evidence of mass concentrations (called “mascons”)—areas of high density below the mare basins that distort lunar orbital trajectories.

When?
Launch date: March 31, 1966, 10:48:00 UTC

Last contact:May 30, 1966

Where?
Luna 10 orbited the moon 460 before it stopped transmitting.

Why?
The soviet space program wanted to know as much as they could about the moon before sending anything there.

How?
The Molniya-M (Russian: Молния, meaning "lightning"), designation 8K78M, was a Russian (previously Soviet) carrier rocket derived from the R-7 Semyorka ICBM. Chiefly designed to correct design deficiencies in the third stage of the 8K78 booster

It also uses a Magnetometer
Gamma-ray spectrometer
Five gas-discharge counters
Two ion traps/charged particle trap
Piezoelectric micrometeorite detector
Infrared detector
Low-energy x-ray photon counters
