ESSENTIAL QUESTION:

In what ways is racism worse in today's society?

The most promising source I found is called, "Yes, America Has Gotten Better About Racism, but it Really Doesn't Matter." This article is written by Mychal Smith, and it explains that racism has not improved, but has simply become more subtle. Smith explains, "While we pat ourselves on the back for not being as horrible as we once were, we allow racism to become further entrenched in every aspect of American life" (Smith 3).

A unique aspect of this article is that it urges people to think beyond their previous thoughts on racism, and enter a new perspective.

Smith's article provides an answer to my essential question by explaining that the subtlety that racism now has is more dangerous because it is not as noticeable as it was in the 1930's. He provides the examples that racism is now seen in frisking young black youth for no apparent reason, and experiencing oppression from higher authorities, rather than through blatant slavery (Smith 5). Another issue he raises is how companies will not openly say they do not hire African Americans, although this is often the reality (Smith 5). The last problem that he addresses is the education system and the opportunities that inner city schools (consisting of mainly minorities) lack (Smith 5).

A harsh reality is brought to life when Smith points out, "Of course we're doing better than legal segregation. But what material benefit do we get from the comparison? What good is better to Renisha McBride, Trayvon Martin or Aiyana Stanley-Jones?"

Each one of these people are victims of racial acts that have occurred in recent years.

These facts proves Smith's point, which is that when a person says racism is no longer an issue in today's society, they are speaking out of ignorance because it is still a completely relevant issue.
