Inclusion (Based on the Research)

Mainstreaming Vs. Integration Vs.Inclusion

  • Mainstreaming= Students are placed into the general education classroom without any kind of specialized instruction or aides.
  • Integration=Students with special needs are "integrated" with general education only part time.
  • Inclusion= General Education classrooms are designed in a way that instruction is accessible to all students and all students are included.

Impact for Children with Mild Disabilities

  • Integration- Performed poorly when compared to other students but had more social success.
  • Inclusion- Demonstrated gains in reading, vocabulary, language, and more- social and behavioral benefits were also noted.

Students with More Severe Disabilities

  • Integration= Increased social competence
  • Inclusion=Behavioral, Social, AND Academic progress- less likely to be involved in isolated activities and more likely to be involved in the class.

Attitudes and Relationships!

  • Positive experiences for students with and without disabilities
  • Enhancement of friendships and relationships
  • Greater understanding and empathy
  • Students with Disabilities- More independence and opportunities to socialize; better academic skills and behavior.
  • Students without disabilities- awareness and appreciation for students with disabilities and higher self esteem.
  • Teachers- Amongst those who were reluctant at first, nearly all found that inclusion was possible, as well as being a very positive experience.

Features of Inclusion

  • Diversity is the Norm
  • Collaborative Teaching Arrangements
  • Flexible School Structure
  • Performance Based and Alternative Assessments

In Summary...

  • With all this research supporting the benefits of inclusion, why is this not the Golden Standard of education?
