NAACP

NATIONAL ASSOCIATION FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF COLORED PEOPLE

The NAACP is based in Baltimore, Maryland

The current president of the NAACP is Cornell William Brooks

The NAACP was founded on February 12, 1909 by William English Walling, Mary White Ovington, Oswald Garrison Villard, Dr. Henry Moscowits, W.E.B. Du Bois, and Ida B. Wells

The NAACP was formed in response to the continuing horrific practice of lynching and the 1908 race riot in Springfield, Illinois

The NAACP's principal objective is to ensure the political, educational, social, and economic quality of minority group citizens of the United States and eliminate racial prejudice, while also seeking to remove all barriers of racial discrimination through the democratic process.

Currently, there are over half a million members of the NAACP

The NAACP provides its members with multiple services from a "perks" card to a defender in major civil rights cases. Depending on the expression of need the NAACP will provide for its members in all aspects of its mission statement.

THE NAACP SUPPORTS...

  • Civic Engagement by helping hundreds of thousands Americans register to vote
  • Environmental and Climate Justice by providing the education to communities of color
  • Economic Opportunity by promoting diversity and inclusion in business hiring, career advancement and procurement, monitoring financial banking practices, and promoting community economic development
  • Education by ensuring an equitable start for all Americans

THE NAACP SUPPORTS...(CONT.)

  • Federal advocacy by the promotion and protection of civil rights, securing a fair and equal criminal justice system, ensuring high quality educational opportunities for all Americans, a fair labor environment, and securing affordable adequate housing and health care for all Americans
  • Health by eliminating the racial and ethnic disparities in our health care system that plague people of color in the United States

THE NAACP SUPPORTS...(CONT.)

  • Criminal Justice by advocating for smarter, results-based criminal justice policies to keep our communities safe, including treatment for addiction and mental health problems, judicial discretion in sentencing, and an end to racial disparities at all levels of the system
  • Media diversity by ensuring that minorities are portrayed positively in programming and the creation of the NAACP Awards

THE NAACP CURRENTLY OPPOSES...

  • The discriminatory provisions in the gang abatement and prevention act because people of color are usually associated with gang violence and t is an injustice to the community
  • The efforts to kill the health benefit exchange in affordable health care act because exchanges are essential to the success of the act
  • Legislation which would dramatically undermine new consumer financial protections because it weakens federal, state, and local efforts, supported by the NAACP to rein in wealth-stripping lenders who charge exorbitant rates and fees

The NAACP is not allowed to endorse or support any candidates, especially presidential candidates, this includes making substantial donations
