O CAPTAIN! MY CAPTAIN!

LINES 1-2

• O Captain! My Captain! our fearful trip is done; The ship has weathered every rack, the prize we sought is won;
• The poem is about a sailor who is praising his captain who led them through a difficult journey and brought them back to the harbor safely.
• The men can now see the harbor in the distance and are celebrating the successful voyage.
• The ship has overcome every storm and wave, and helped the sailors acquire their prize.

LINES 3-4

• The port is near, the bells I hear, the people all exulting, while follow eyes the steady keel, the vessel grim and daring.
• The families and friends of the sailors awaiting their loved ones to return on the deck, when the main narrator starts to change the mood.
• He says that his eyes follow the ship, while it looks grim and daring.
• He is starting to foreshadow that something bad might happen.

LINES 5-8

• "But o heart!heart!heart! O the bleeding drops of red, where on the deck my captain lies, fallen cold and dead."
• Lost in the crowd and excitement of returning home, the crew members didn't notice that their captain had fallen and passed away.
• Now all of the people on the dock looking to see the man behind the great return will be shocked to see the crew carrying the captain off deceased.
