CAUSES OF THE CIVIL WAR: SLAVERY

• The South wanted slavery to help with farming on plantations but the North did not see a need for slave labor
• This disagreement caused the two sides to turn against each other
• Without slavery, the other 2 causes wouldn't exist

CAUSES OF THE CIVIL WAR: STATE'S RIGHTS

• During the Civil War, this focused primarily on slavery and whether the federal government had the right to regulate or abolish slavery within a state

CAUSES OF THE CIVIL WAR: SECTIONALISM

• Sectionalism- the excessive devotion to local interests and customs to a region of a nation
• This further divided the country into two sections- the North and South

• The first battle in the Civil War
