A Farewell to Arms
Author: Ernest Hemingway

WHAT IS THE APPEAL OF HEMINGWAY’S PARATACTIC STYLE?

Although I have read Hemingway’s other works and I am familiar with his books, yet I am still attracted by his writing style once I open the new book.

His writing is simple but attractive. It also is the reason that his books are still very popular today.

A Farewell to Arms is a book about the war and love. In the book, Hemingway described the cruelty of war perfectly.

So I began to wonder, how can Hemingway use such simple words to reveal the cruel reality, and lead people to think about it deeply?

How can he attract people so much?

HEMINGWAY’S PARATACTIC STYLE COME WITH A “COMPLEX PROBLEM TO SLOVE” (Tyler 52).

This quote from the book impressed me very much because this sentence inspired me to think about another direction.

The resource states that Hemingway’s writing style is different from other people that often use the complex word, but his words also can describe and explain the detail of the situation perfectly.

Sometimes we don’t need complex and gorgeous words to explain a situation. Simple words can lead the readers direct to the central idea of the the plot.

For example, Hemingway use just one simple sentence to show the cruelty of the war in the end of chapter one. He only states the huge number of death, which unlike other authors. Usually authors will spend a lot of time to reveal the bloody scenes of war, Hemingway does not.

However, the simple, huge number immediately lead me to image the bloody war, and begin to think about the necessity of the war.

This is the reason that I think his work and writing style is so attractive to almost all ages readers.
