In 1873 the United States fell into an economic depression and about one fifth of people lost their jobs.

Mary Harris Jones became a strong leader who was known be a lot of people. She helped organize meetings, give speeches, and supported strikers. She was so well known, she was given the name of Mother Jones.

The government became very strict about racism, when sometimes Chinese workers received less than American workers did.

Unexpectedly, someone in the crowd threw a bomb! Killing 7 people and wounding 60. The police, not knowing who threw it, randomly fired at the crowd, killing several and wounding more than 100 people...

Samuel Gompers, became the national leader of the American Federation of Labor in 1886. In 18 years the AFL had about 1.7 million members.

Andrew Carnegie, the owner of the steel mills, reduced the wages the workers received, the workers started the Homestead Strike, he locked them out, hired nonunion labor and also 300 guards to protect him...

The battle has begun! Ten people had been left dead. After 4 months the strike fell, breaking the union.
