What is Blended Learning?

Why Blended Learning?

  • Address needs of over scheduled teens
  • Self-paced
  • Allow for more creativity
  • Encounter/experience
Have “Home study” program but never really liked it…wanted to accommodate needs of teens in a more effective way. We all know those kids who are over scheduled but they still want to be part of the program…they end missing a lot or dropping out completely. Then we also have those young people who really do know their stuff and want to go a little deeper, or the ones who need a little extra time. And we have all heard about trying to create moments of encounter with Jesus for our young people through meaningful prayer and other experiences that we don’t always have time for as we try to fit everything in to our tradition religious ed classes. With blended learning we can give our busy teens a way to continue their faith formation at a pace that works for them on a schedule that works for them. The teens can be a little more creative as well as the catechist or faith formation leader. The “stuff” of our faith – the vocabulary and elements of our faith that we need to know to understand our faith can be covered online freeing up time when we meet face to face

My Journey So Far

Vision Vs. Reality
As I mentioned before, I want to be honest about what this journey has been so far so I will lay out what I envisioned this would look like and how it has manifested itself so far.

Vision

  • Online learning
  • Monthly gatherings
  • Two team projects
The basic summary of what I hoped would happen was to have the students do some online learning on their own while still gathering on a monthly basis. In addition each student would pair up with someone else to complete two projects. I will discuss these in more details now.

Online learning

  • Schoology platform (LMS)
  • Readings from chapter
  • Videos
  • "Quizzes" based on chapter
  • Discussion questions
The students are covering the same materials as their 10th grade peers which is the section on liturgy and and the sacraments from St. Mary’s Press’ Catholic Faith Handbook. They are expected to read each chapter as well as watch some supplementary videos that I found so they can complete a “short quiz” and answer a discussion question/reflection.

It took a little time to set it all up but I can tweak it as the year goes on and I should be able to re-use it next year. There are helpful tutorials and the help section is very good. The students are all set up and they haven’t reported any problems. One of the biggest challenges I have had has been finding time to review the materials that have been submitted. I need to be better about scheduling time to do that. It’s still not intuitive to me…I forget how to do things I have already done…in other words, I am still learning. Share story of videos…

LMS

  • Schoology
  • Moodle
  • Canvas
  • Edmodo
  • Blackboard
  • And lots more!
Online learning is made more manageable by using an LMS or learning management system. The one I am using is called Schoology. I chose Schoology honestly because it’s the one they use in San Bernadino – and it’s free! But there are a lot of other ones out there…

Monthly gatherings - Vision

  • Orientation - September
  • October - Parish Mission
  • November - "Field trip"
  • December - Service experience
  • January - Pray; share project one
  • February - Safe Environment session
  • March - Pray; share project two
  • April - Family program
  • May - Pray; wrap up/celebrate
In my vision, in addition to the online learning we would gather once a month as a small group. Go through schedule.

Monthly gatherings - Reality

  • Schedule problems
  • Confusion about projects/solo not teams
  • Service experience still in works
This is where things really have not worked out like I planned…we have been unable to schedule a time for our field trip or the service experience…between my schedule and the teens, it has not worked out. So for this year, we are skipping the field trip. There was a little confusion about the projects and when they were due so most of them weren’t ready for our January meeting. Tell about re-schedule for Packer game. So we have really only met as a small group twice. It was a good meeting – with the girls…had to punt a little with the boys…

We are still hoping to do a service project if we can schedule a time. Right now it looks like they may do the service on their own and then we will reflect on the experience together. I gave them a list of places…I am still hopeful though!

Team Projects

  • Creative project one: create video/presentation based on chapter
  • Possible platforms: Animoto, Moovly, Prezi, Power Point, iMovie...
  • Project two: Create another video OR video review

Video Review

  • Find video on assigned chapter
  • Review for content, accuracy, appeal, what would they have done differently?

Projects

  • Not team, but individual
  • Two (out of five) submitted so far

What will I do differently?

  • Part of initial RE registration
  • "Orientation" in summer
  • Schedule "trips" in summer??? or spread out through year
  • Introduce "badges" or gaming into lessons
Despite some of the issues we have had, I would like to continue to offer this for a small group. I didn’t have this all together until the end of the summer so I didn’t send something out about it until after our registration went out. For next year, I will include this option on the initial registration and perhaps have an “orientation” in the summer. In fact, I would like to schedule the “field trip and the service experience during the summer before. There are also ways to use badges and gaming with Schoology – I need to explore that a little more.
