Go Set A Watchman

The book, Go Set A Watchman, written by Harper Lee was released in 2015. The next book in the series of To Kill A Mockingbird, focuses on Scout’s life after she comes back from New York. The main conflict includes Scout struggling with the decision of valuing her own opinions or to keep following the opinions in her small town of Maycomb. Lee develops Scout to push out all bias opinions of her loved ones, so she can fully develop her own values and opinions.

Why must we acknowledge our biases?

In the article, “Why We Must Understand and Address Implicit Bias,” by Jenna Nabors, it dials into the idea of how being bias can be destructive. Nabors focuses on exactly what implicit biases are and how to measure the amount in your daily life. “Understanding and addressing biases you may possess are important so you can be aware of how you treat and interact with others, both consciously and subconsciously” (Nabors). Interacting to others, when having a closed mindset, due to biases, can negatively effect a relationship. Biases can cause separation within a community, which is drawn out in Go Set A Watchman very well.

Go Set A Watchman was a great book that followed To Kill A Mockingbird because of the character development that was shown. Scout was always grown up right by her father side, which lead her to following his opinions as well. She had time when coming back home and spent it catching up with old friends in her community. She soon notices how much grouping there has been based on bias opinions. Learning to adjust back to her home life, Scout also learns to adjust to new values and seeing other point of views. She isn’t afraid to show others that she cares for them and will not follow other’s opinions. Bias opinions do not only exist in books, but also in real life.

Bias opinions are a main cause of separation within a community. Not being able to talk to others and push them off to the side due to not having the same beliefs, values or opinions is what destroys communities. When one is able to understand that everyone has a different view on topics and different gifts, this can build a stronger community and stand with them to be all treated equally with love and respect.
