Figurative Language in Film
Symbolic images help us to understand abstract concepts that cannot always be translated into words
describing a comparison between two fundamentally different things
compares or describes one thing as another without the use of like or as
a mark or character used as a conventional representation of an object, function, or process
the use of symbols to represent ideas or qualities.
a symbol is typically an object, meaning must be inferred from context
a metaphor is usually an action, meaning is abstract and non-literal
think of metaphor as poetry
feeling instead of thinking
a sustained metaphor used in film, the visual arts, or literature
