Intro to OLC

PRESENTATION OUTLINE

Daniel McGarry

Father, Husband, Memphis Grizzlies Fan

I work in Memphis at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in the College of Nursing.

I am the Educational Technology coordinator so I don’t actually teach a course, but I teach faculty members how to use technology which can be even more challenging. ☺

My only online teaching experience is building an Online Orientation course which was the first of it’s kind so it was mostly an experiment that will be improved as we learn along the way.

I understand a learning community to mean that we will collectively synthesize new knowledge as we discuss and work through the material.

I plan to glean as much from others in this course as I am new to online teaching.

In my Online Orientation course the students are asked to respond to some simple questions in a discussion board that are purposefully superficial.

They are not meant to create a learning environment but rather to introduce non-traditional learners to an LMS discussion board.
I also created a forum so all the new students could chat about where they are from, goals, etc.

Personal Goals:

Understand the process by which knowledge and be created and developed in an asynchronous environment.

Have a better eye for what works and doesn’t work so I can advise faculty on building their courses.

I will be redesigning the Online Orientation course.

The students are new to our institution each semester and range from Bachelors to Doctorate.

My main hope for this course being online is that since we currently offer hybrid and face to face programs we would like to limit the amount of time students are “required” to be on campus.

We have just begun an entirely online program and have a need for students to get all of the information they need without setting foot on our campus.

The online orientation course will be pivotal as we admit more and more online only students and can expand the program across state lines and beyond.
