EARLY CHILDHOOD

  • Lived in south
  • Parents separated at age 2
  • Moved to Pine Level, Alabama
  • Lived with her grandparents

EDUCATION

  • Learned to read by mother
  • Went to elementary in Pine Level
  • Attended many other schools
  • Continuing in Montgomery, AL
  • Attended a high school associated with Alabama State but...

Sadly, Rosa was pulled away from her studies to tend to her sick grandma & mom. She never had a chance to continue her education but did find a job at a local factory.

ROSA'S LOVE

  • At age 19, Rosa met Raymond Parks
  • Member of NAACP
  • National Association for the Advancement
  • Of Colored People

Rosa finished her education with a high school degree in 1933 and also joined the NAACP along with her husband. She later became the chapter's youth leader and secretary.

THE FAMOUS BUS INCIDENT

On Dec. 1, 1955, Rosa just done with a long days work at the Montgomery department store, where she works as a seamstress. She boarded the Cleveland Avenue bus for home.

AFTER THE INCIDENT

  • Rosa was taken to Police HQ
  • She was then released on bail
  • E.D Nixon plans to boycott buses

TRIAL

  • Dec. 5, 1955- Day of Rosa's trial
  • Members of the African American Community
  • We're asked to stay off the city buses
  • Rosa was found guilty and fined $14.00

MONTGOMERY BUS BOYCOTT

  • The boycott was a success
  • Buses became empty
  • The city began to fall with violence
  • Segregationists retaliated with violence
  • Black citizens were arrested

COURT ACTION

  • Fred Grey filed a law suit
  • Court declared racial segregation
  • Laws to be unconstitutional
  • But... The City of Montgomery
  • Later appealed the decision

AFTER THE CASE

  • Boycotting still went on
  • Rosa and Raymond moved to
  • Detroit, MI to find jobs
  • Rosa works as a secretary to
  • U.S Rep. John Conyer

Rosa had a wonderful and memorable life afterwards. She published many books and received many medals. She passed away on Oct. 24, 2005 at age 25 of progressive dementia.

Many memorial services were held, and she was also named one of the "20 most influential people of the 20th century" in Times Magazine.
