PORT ROYAL & THE CIVIL WAR

  • It was the Union headquarters
  • Where the Union Navy blockade began

Port Royal Experiment-
When the Union captured Port Royal all the white planters fled. They freed all the slaves and then hired them to work on the Sea Island plantations for pay. After the Emancipation Proclamation, all the freed men were able to purchase a third of nearly 102,000 acres abandoned by the white planters.

Penn School
Was a school for abandoned slaves and taught them how to prepare for freedom.

~83% of the population around Port Royal were slaves.
~Winfield Scott divided the blockade into 4 regions; the north and South Atlantic Blockading squadrons, responsible for watching the eastern sea board and the East and West Gulf blockading the Gulf of Mexico
