Before "The Event", chuck found a way to mix colors from his palette directly on the canvas.

He also had the photographs separated into red, blue, and yellow. He paint's mostly with oil on canvas.

Then, in 1988 Chuck became paralyzed from a spinal artery collapse, and thought he would never paint again.

But Chuck Close wouldn't give up so easily. He eventually found a way to paint, sitting in a wheelchair with his brush strapped to his hand.

"If you wait for inspiration, you will never get anything done. When you look at my paintings, there is no way of knowing which day I was happy, or which days I was sad,which days I was up or I was down. The important thing is getting into a rythm and continuing it.
