WHERE THEY LIVE

  • The Tutsi live in Rwanda.
  • Rwanda is located in Central/Eastern Africa.

LANGUAGE

  • The Tutsi speak Rwanda-Rundi as their native language.
  • Rwanda-Rundi is subdivided into the Kinyarwanda and Kirundi dialects.

  • Rwanda has a population of 8.6 million, 90% Hutu, 9% Tutsi.
  • Religion of the people is 1% Muslim, 25% Indigenous beliefs, 74% Christian.

  • When European colonists conducted censuses,
  • they wanted to identify people in Rwanda based off a classification scheme.
  • They defined "Tutsi" as anyone owning more than ten cows,
  • with the physical feature of a longer nose,
  • or a longer neck.

THE RWANDAN GENOCIDE

  • This was a genocidal mass slaughter of Tutsi and moderate Hutu in Rwanda
  • From April 7, 1994, to mid-July, 500,000–1,000,000 Rwandans were killed.
