1968 STUDENT WALKOUT

CONDITIONS

  • Many Chicanos were treated unequal by the schools and were not taught to read or write.
  • Chicanos got less of an education and teachers were known for how horrible they taught them.
  • They were called dirty Mexicans and disrespected by many.

ACTIONS

  • In 1968 10,000 students from 5 different schools walked out of their classes.
  • Following that 2,000 more students decided to walk out alone.
  • The Chicanos made a list of 36 demands and showed them to the school board. If those were not met they threatened to walk out again.

OBSTACLES

  • Many of the Chicanos faced Racism and were called Dirty Mexicans.
  • Many people told the Chicanos they should "know their place" in the school system.
  • On May 31, 1968 police arrested 13 activists.

ACHEIVMENTS

  • The list the Chicanos gave the board passed and Chicanos had more equal rights.
  • Federal officials from the United States Department of Justice responded to the student’s demands by telling the school board to provide bilingual, bicultural education, improved testing programs, and additional cultural celebrations.
