Face jugs were supposed to ward off evil spirits, but they eventually turned more decorative.

When someone was buried, face jugs were buried with them to ward off evil spirits.

Face jugs were also found on the Underground Railroad, suggesting that they were VERY important to slaves. This face jug is from SC.
