THE PURITAN RELIGON

PURITAN ORIGINS

  • The Puritans were a group who grew away from the Anglican church
  • Contrary to common beliefs they were not a small group
  • They began in 1560 as a movment for religous reform
  • They believed the Elizabethan ecclesiastical was to political, and Catholic
  • Their aim was to purify the church, not seperate from it

PURITAN BELIEFS

  • Puritans belived that the Bible was God's true law
  • They also belived in Predestination
  • Elects and Saints were the ones who were "saved"
  • The ones that werent saved were considered "Wicked"
  • They wished to create somewhat of a utopia where there was no rebellion

PURITAN BELIEFS ( CONTINUED )

  • They wanted to put an end to religious hierarchy which lead to corruption
  • Dancing and drinking alcohol was acceptable
  • Inappropriately dancing and getting drunk were not
  • Adultery was punishable by death
  • They also belived the church should follow the scriptures exactly

PURITAN SELF CONFLICTION

  • Because of their want for purity they isolated themselvs
  • They quickly turned upon each other at the slightest hint of evil
  • They belived that Jesus only saved the chosen

PURITAN HISTORY

  • There were two types of Puritans
  • The radicle Puritans were less tolerant
  • They were known in England for taking control of
  • - entire congregations as to make a stand against the Church
  • - of Engyland

  • Non-Radicle Puritans were seen as time went on and
  • - the Puritan movement grew, as hairsplitters who slavishly
  • - followed their Bibles as guides to everyday life
  • They often appeared in drama and satire as secretly lascivious
  • -purveyors of feigned piety

MORE HISTORY

  • In 1608 a well sized group of Puritans moved to Holland
  • - for fear of persecution
  • They then moved to a place they eventually called Plymouth
  • - in 1608
  • Ten years later a larger, better financed group joined them and set up -

MORE HISTORY

  • gathered churches which were based upon the previously
  • - set up churches in Plymouth
  • Many Puritans became well educated ( mostly men )
  • This revealed their societies isolation and caused many
  • - members began to spread throught America to find new religions
