The Gulf of Mexico

BY: MARK DEMAURO

WHERE IS IT?

ITS LOCATED EAST OF MEXICO, AND WEST OF FLORIDA.

WHAT IS ITS PURPOSE?
It provides many resources such as:

-Fish, approximately 1.3 billion pounds worth. The Gulf contains four fishing ports.
- Oil, and other minerals. In 2006 470 million barrels of oil and about a Thousand Cubic Feet of natural gas came from the Gulf of Mexico.
- Numerous habitats for animals and fish. This included coastal wetlands, submerged vegetation, important upland areas, and marine/offshore areas.

The Big Spill

The Gulf oil spill is recognized as the worst oil spill in U.S. history. On April 20, 2010, a explosion occurred at the Deepwater Horizon oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico. It killed 11 people. During the explosion, remote underwater cameras revealed a BP pipe was leaking oil and gas on the ocean floor about 42 miles off the coast of Louisiana. An estimated 4.9 million barrels of oil had leaked into the Gulf.

Today compared with back then?
Today it is used greatly for travel with boats. This was still a reason back then, but also a big way it was used was trade. Also because of the oil spill, there is still some there, and there is no certain time when it will be clean.
