Beginning

  • USA and Soviet Union disagreed politically.
  • Called the Cold War because no actual "heat of battle" took place.
  • Tension between USSR and USA from uneasy alliance in WWII.

Economic Systems


In the Soviet Union Communism led to an economy that laizzes-faire economy that was theoretically meant to split everything up evenly. The United States had a capitalist economy that revolved around free enterprise. The principle difference is that capitalism is in the hands of the people and Communism has the government controlling the economy.

Us Foreign Policy

  • USSR strengthened army to match US
  • Funded Revolutions so they could gain support.
  • Russia did all of these things in response to US policies.

Kitchen Debate

Vice President Richard Nixon and Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev engage in a heated debate about capitalism and communism in the middle of a model kitchen set up for the fair. It occurred in the American National Exhibition at Sokolniki Park in Moscow on July 24, 1959. It illustrated the non violent conflict. It also illustrated how far apart these two countries were.
