CH 5 ELEMENTS, COMPOUNDS, AND MIXTURES

Elements
Elements are substance that cannot be broken down into simpler substances
Elements are put into groups. Which this is called the periodic table of elements.

The 3 major categories of elements!!
The 3 are metals, nommetals, and metalloids.
Metals are shiny and can conduct heat and electricity. Nonmetals are dull and poorly conducts heat and electricity. Metalloids have properties of both metals and nonmetals. They are shiny, some are dull.

Compounds!
Compounds are pure substances composed of 2 or ore elements that are chemically combined. Like elements compounds have properties to. They have chemical and physical properties.

Compounds vs. elements!
A compound has properties that differ from element ones. For example salt and sodium chloride are made of 2 different types of elements, sodium and chlorine. Sodium reacts violently with water. Chlorine is a poisonous gas. But when combined they make a harmless compounds that has unique properties.

Mixtures
Mixtures is a combination of 2 or more substances that are not chemically combined. You can separate mixtures through physical methods. Like salt and water mix together. To separate you leave the water out side to evaporate physical and the salt is left behind.

Solutions
Solutions is a homogenous mixture that appears to be a single substance. Solute and solvent are apart of it too. Solute is the substance that dissolves. Solvent is the substance in which the solute dissolves.
