WHAT WAS THE GREEK ALPHABET LIKE?

  • over 2,500 years old
  • first alphabet to have vowels
  • first two letters were alpha and beta meaning alphabet
  • Vowels are α, ε, η, ι, ο, υ, ω

WHAT MEAT DID THE GREEKS EAT?

  • pork, lamb, beef, goat, chicken, veal and rabbit
  • meat was eaten perhaps twice a week and usually with vegetables, pasta or grains
  • meat was expensive
  • pork was the most popular type of meat
  • feast would involve meat sheep and or goats if special occasion cattle and pig

WHAT EFFECT DID DANCE HAVE ON THE GREEKS?

  • dancing played a major role in religion
  • there were many dancers from beginners to moderate
  • dance was done for many things one is prepare for war
  • celebrate weddings
  • overcome depression and to cure physical illness

NAME THREE GREEK GODS!

  • Zues
  • Apollo
  • Demeter

ZUES

  • Zeus was responsible for the weather and shaped it according to his temper
  • Zeus was the "Lord of Justice"
  • He punished anyone who lied or broke an oath
  • Zeus had his golden throne on the highest summit of Mount Olympus

APOLLO

  • God of the sun, music, and art, one of the most versatile gods
  • He invented the lute, a plucked string instrument with a body shaped like a pear
  • Apollo excelled in important music contests

DEMETER

  • Goddess of the harvest and mother of Persephone
  • source of all growth and life
  • provided all nutrition on the earth

SPARTA WOMEN RIGHTS

  • Girls were given a good education in both the arts and athletics
  • Women owned more than a third of the land
  • Mothers reared their sons until age 7 and then society took over.
  • Fathers played little or no role in child care.
  • Sparta women had more rights then Athenian women
