THE MOVEMENT IN THE AIR

  • Air moves from areas of higher pressure toward areas of lower pressure which creates wind
  • If the air travels fare enough north, it will have traveled far there east than a point on the ground beneath it. As a result, the air appears to follow a curved path
  • Coriolis effect is the apparent curving of the path due to earths rotation

GLOBAL WINDS

  • Pressure belts at every 30 degrees of latitude and Coriolis effect produce pattern of calm area and wind systems
  • Polar easterlies, westerlies, trade winds
  • Jet steam are narrow belts of high-speed wind that blow from the west to east
