ORGIN

  • Bred from red foxhounds and red Irish Foxhounds
  • Scottish immigrants brought red foxhounds to america in late 1700's
  • Red irish foxhounds were imported before civil war
  • Bred for being swift and fast for locating raccoons and for the flashy, red color of the dog
  • Part of the Hound group

NATURAL INSTINCTS

  • Treeing has been bred in the dog
  • Hotter-nosed, swift, fast for raccoon hunting

BEHAVIOR

  • Happy, even tempered, and very good with children
  • Loves being with people
  • Adapts well to family life

LIVING CONDITIONS

  • Will do ok in apartment if it is exercised daily
  • Relatively inactive indoors
  • Will do best with daily exercise and large yard

EXERCISE

  • Need daily walk or jog
  • Are natural born hunters and will run off if not fenced in

HEALTH PROBLEMS

  • Usually a healthy breed
  • Some lines have had hip dysplasia

LIFE EXPECTANCY

  • Red bone coonhounds usually live around 11-12 years

HEIGHT AND WEIGHT

  • 21-27 inches usually
  • average weight is 50-70 pounds
