PRESENTATION OUTLINE
Pronounced like "cook sisters" and means cake sisters.
Comes from the Dutch word "koekji" which translates to "cookie".
2 VERSIONS OF KOEKSISTERS
1. AFRIKANER VERSION- CRISPIER WITH MORE SYRUP
2. CAPE MALAY VERSION- CAKE TEXTURED, SPICIER, COCONUT SHAVINGS
Modernly sold in bakeries, used to be eaten as desserts in fancy dinners.
BATTER (INGREDIENTS)
- Eggs
- Flour and Baking powder
- Milk
- Butter
- Salt
SYRUP (INGREDIENTS)
- Sugar
- Water (+ Lemon is optional)
- Cream of tartar &Tartaric Acid
- Cinnamon
COOKING METHODS (BATTER)
- Sift the flour, baking powder and salt together
- Mix in the butter, eggs and water
- Work the dough until it's not lumpy
- Let the dough rest for about 1hour
- Braid dough then fry until golden brown
COOKING METHODS (SYRUP)
- Usually prepared the day before so it's cold
- Dissolve sugar in water
- Add preferred spices
- Let syrup cool overnight
- Pour syrup onto fried dough
